The Expedition Lodge offers a convenient location near Rocky Mountain National Park and downtown Estes Park, often praised for friendly staff and value. However, reviews highlight issues with cleanliness, outdated rooms, inconsistent service, and operational problems such as broken appliances and noisy rooms.
By far the worst hotel we had during our vacation. Room was old, squeeky, noisy and dirty at places. We were upgraded to a suite but i'd have rather had a clean standard room for the 200 bucks (!) we paid for one night. When we wanted to shower in the morning, it didn't work at all. We addressed this with the manager but not even an apology was given.. Bed and linen was clean, only positive. Also caution cause it's quite far from the centre (restaurants) of Estes Park.
Expedition Lodge was a wonderful time for our family because it felt like an extension of the national park experience with the stunning views, gathering areas for relaxing, eating, and playing games together as a family. There was lots of room at the pool and the breakfast featured fresh bread that me and my kids enjoyed. I liked the board game area and played games there while my kids napped. The staff gave us excellent recommendations for restaurants and activities that we all enjoyed such as Antonio's pizza and the downtown river walk. Very happy to stay at Expedition Lodge and look forward to returning soon.
Pros: Front desk employees are very nice and as accommodating as they can be. Cons: This motel has a ton of stairs. Yes there is one European sized elevator, however you still have to go up or down stairs even though you use the elevator. We had to change our rooms to 1st floor, to get to breakfast with using stairs you will need to walk outside. This pictures make the rooms and motel look much nicer than it is. The rooms are not very clean at all. The towels are subpar. The heater/AC is different from room to room, some are very old and do not hold a temperature. The breakfast is ok. However they aren’t very good at keeping up on the items they need. Our 2nd morning they were out of regular coffee creamer, they only had flavored.
Location is great, beds are comfortable. Fridge was broken and seeing as we are staying here for a full week, it was important however twice requested a different one to two separate staff and was ignored. Outside deck was great but furniture is filthy. Breakfast was ok but exact same stuff every day. Waffles are only available sporadically. Fruit was minimal. Toilet was stained and sink was missing hardware, outside trash was not emptied. The place has potential but owners and staff simply do not want to be bothered.
Awesome experience here! Let's face it, this isn't a 5 star hotel, but it DOES deserve a 5 star review! Fairly basic, but clean. Very good value for the money.....and it looks like they are doing some remodeling upgrades. I was very happy with the guy behind the counter, Tim. (We were staying at a local cabin, and we were having a not so great experience, then a "Karen" guest added icing to the cake and we decided to bail.) Tim made the process SO much easier and enjoyable! Oh yeah, did I mention the game room and 24/7 pool!!?? Just a pleasure to deal with him and this lodge....I highly recommend!
Average rooms and good parking. Breakfast was very limited. Employees were OK, some were strange, some were nice. Be aware that this is a pet-friendly hotel. We had dogs barking across the hall from us for over 12 hours, and management did nothing. Lost an expensive night of sleep.
We stayed at the Expedition Lodge for 5 nights while visiting the Rocky Mountains National Park over Christmas and really enjoyed our stay. The staff is really nice and friendly, they have a games room where you can play while you do your laundry. The location is excellent, in front of Estes Lake, and you just have to drive down the road to get to the main street where all the shops and restaurants are. It’s also really close to the shop where you can rent hiking gear, and the drive to RMNP is 10 minutes max. The pool unfortunately isn’t heated, just room temperature, so the water was too cold for me during December.
A nice place to stay in Estes! Technically walkable to downtown, but also a super quick drive to downtown and the park. We did find that the WiFi does not work and our room didn’t have a TV remote. The breakfast choices are a bit odd- we were expecting some typical items like bacon, eggs, hash browns. There were waffles and cereal though for those of us who aren’t adventurous with our breakfast. Walls are very thin, so be prepared to hear your neighbors all night! Overall a nice stay for a couple nights in Estes.
I arrived at Expedition Lodge around midnight on a very cold night. No one was initially at the front desk, but as soon as I called, a very polite young man showed up and helped me get settled. The first room had a heating issue, so he quickly and smoothly switched me to a better room at the same price. His professionalism and kindness set a great tone for my stay. Now, around 9 months later, all I remember from this place are warm and positive memories — not just from the lodge itself but also from my visit to Rocky Mountain National Park. Expedition Lodge has a special energy that reminded me of the good family trips I had as a child back in Iran. Just an hour before my checkout, a heavy snowfall started and covered everything in white very quickly. After talking with the staff, I decided to continue my trip toward Salt Lake City, UT. The manager, who was originally from Florida, kindly gave me his number and told me to call him if I got stuck on the snowy roads. He had a pickup truck, and I was driving a sedan — his offer meant a lot to me, and I will always remember his kindness. Unfortunately, I don’t remember his name, but I want to send a warm hello to all the staff at Expedition Lodge, especially that gentleman manager. Thank you for making my stay unforgettable.
My wife and I stayed one night at the Expedition Lodge for our anniversary, and we had a wonderful experience. The building has an older charm but is clearly well maintained. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the bed was excellent — one of my top priorities when traveling. The mattress struck the perfect balance between firm and soft; it didn’t sag in the middle or feel worn out. Breakfast was different from what I’m used to but pleasantly surprising. While I typically look forward to a spread with bacon, eggs, and biscuits and gravy, this lodge offered some creative local options like “Build Your Own Estes Park Deviled Eggs” and “Elk Jerky Green Chili.” I wasn’t brave enough to try the deviled eggs (a decision I now regret), but I did sample the chili — and it was wonderful! It’s not something I’d normally eat for breakfast, but I really enjoyed it, especially with a bit of shredded cheese on top. Beyond the room and breakfast, the staff made a great impression. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and accommodating. We arrived from Denver much earlier than planned after an early morning flight and reached the lodge around 11 a.m. I didn’t expect our room to be ready, but to my surprise, the front desk had one available and kindly allowed us to check in early — which was a lifesaver after being awake since 1 a.m.! Thank you, Expedition Lodge, for helping make our anniversary getaway so enjoyable. We truly appreciated the comfort, hospitality, and unique touches that made our stay memorable.
